I ♥ Vodcast

This week's workshop introduced so many fascinating web 2.0 tools to me! Digital Storytelling, Social Sharing, Podcast/Vodcast are some of the tools that left a huge impression on me.

I always knew what podcast and vodcast were, but never really dappled in it. Today, I decided to take the brave step forward and spent close to 2 hours making my very own vodcast! (and yet its not perfected) I have to admit though it was daunting initially, I had lots of fun creating it. I can only imagine how excited students would be to use these tools to enhance their educational development.

For the purpose of this blog, the term 'podcast' means a series of audio files (RSS feeds) & 'vodcast' means a series of videos.

One of the main advantages in using podcast/vodcast in education is that the material that is created is always available for users to access it. Students can chose when they wish to access the podcast/vodcast and be selective in which areas they wish to focus on. Thus, there is no need to listen/view the whole recording if it is not necessary.

By using such technology in the classrooms, educators may find that students are more engage in lessons and interested in developing their skills as they are able to relate to it. As educators, we have to plan and prepare lessons that incorporate new tools like these that highlight concepts and support the curriculum. Using these tools in education should be encouraged as students' safety/privacy is mostly protected by the use of avatars and voice recording.

Below is my maiden attempt in creating a vodcast with the help of the very useful Xtranormal website.
Please be gentle with your reviews! :)

  1. Well the time on your vodcast was well spent. Good on you. I find it difficult sometimes to think outside the box when it comes to planning and including ICT within that. However, now that we have had numerous websites highlighted to us which are safe to use within the educational context, it is a little easier to start thinking and incorporating different elements. I have one concern with the incorporation of ICT within lesson planning however, and it is the logistics of giving all students within the classroom equal opportunity to avail of the "online" services. This is in consideration of the fact that often schools only have 3-4 pc's in a classroom. I guess this is where, once again, we need to become "creative".

  2. I love your vodcast! Great job! You've inspired me to give it a try!

  3. Thanks Mary, I guess the first step would be for teachers to 'play around' with these tools and decide which is appropriate for their lesson and then probably introduce the ICT element through the interactive whiteboards (if the school has one) to students collectively. It could also be possible for students to do pair/group work with ICT if there are limited number of pc's in a classroom. Like you said, its all about being creative!

I just loved your vod cast and I hope to find two hours so that I can make one. I think I will use your website xtranormal.com
This is the first time I have visited your blog and I just love your template and the colours reflect your beautiful smile.

  6. That's really nice of you, Helena. Thank you! Yup, it did take about 2 hours to create it as this was my first time ever making some thing like this, but I have to admit it was fun! I hope you do experiment with the site as well, Helena.

  7. Great animation! It's good to see you integrating theory and practice by using an animation to explain the benefits of animations ...

Would you mind if I borrowed this animation to show in some future classes?

Not at all, you have copyright privileges!

  9. Hi Rosh

That is cool! Yes, I can understand how loooooooooooooong it takes to do anything in the cyber world! Just working out how to navigate around my blog and set it up took days!

Have you seen the Voki in my blog? That took ages as well and when my grandaughter heard it (originally with my voice) she said it sounded boring and daggie and she wanted to have a go. You can hear her speak on it and that took lots of goes as she kept making mistakes, which is easy to do when you record your own voice!

When I get time I might do one like yours, maybe with her help as she said her teacher doesn't do anything interesting like what I am learning. She wants me to do my ATP in her class so I can show the kids all the fun things in learning!

I agree with Helena your blog does reflect your personality.

  10. The effort has paid off, Cindy. Your blog (and Voki)looks really good. :)

I think its important in today's world to incorporate such tools in our teaching. Children are far more exposed to such tools and have better experience in using them. Thus, as teachers, I feel we should experiment with web 2.0 tools that will benefit our lessons and use them in a classroom. This is a great way to have a trial run of the many awesome tools out there!

  11. Thanks, Rosh, for the permission to show your animation in future courses!

I notice that on a few of the discussion threads, like on this one, people have commented how long it sometimes takes to create web 2.0 resources. It's true that the initial experimentation can be time-consuming, but it does get easier. You'll also find that a lot of the same principles underpin most of the web 2.0 tools, so once you've mastered one or two, it becomes much faster to add new ones to your repertoire!
